Growing up in St. Mary’s and having worked closely with the Navy bases in our community, John understands the importance of helping military families. As a result, returning military members are exempt from motor vehicle excise taxes on the purchase of a new car within one year of return. John also co-sponsored a law that protects the child custody and visitation rights of members of the armed services while they are deployed.
Maryland is expecting an influx of about 45,000 new jobs from the Base Realignment and Closure process. Although the St. Mary’s community is very familiar with BRAC, many other counties in the State are just beginning the process. John co-sponsored a bill creating the Base Realignment and Closure Subcabinet, to coordinate all State agencies response to the new round of BRAC.
John has also co-sponsored the creation of the Task Force on Educational Issues Affecting Military Children, to help military children in the current round of BRAC transition into Maryland schools; the Task Force to Study State Assistance to Veterans, which will make recommendations to lawmakers about improving availability and accessibility of existing services and the feasibility and need of new services to returning veterans. John also co-sponsored the Maryland Veterans Behavioral Health Act, to improve coordination between local, state and federal agencies to provide much-needed services and supports for returning veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. |
